Our prediction for this League 1 match:
Abbey Stadium will host the Boxing Day clash between Cambridge United and Shrewsbury Town. The U’s do not seem to be at their sharpest, with the team failing to win the last four league fixtures, but their display in a goalless draw with Plymouth was promising. Cambridge United are eager to return to winning ways, and they are likely to adopt an attack-minded approach against Shrewsbury.
There are no fresh selection worries in the home team. Meanwhile, the visitors are eyeing their fifth consecutive win in all competitions, but given Cambridge’s performance in the goalless draw with Plymouth, we believe that there is a big value in betting on draw. In their last meeting in the League One the two teams played out a goalless draw, and we predict that history is going to repeat itself. Rob Street serves a one-game ban for the visitors.
Highlighted Player (Liam O’Neil):
Born in Cambridge, England on July 31, 1993, Liam O’Neil is an English footballer who plays as both defender as midfielder for Cambridge United in the League Two. O’Neil is a product of the Cambridge United football school, but he played for Histon during his youth career as well.
In the summer of 2012 he joined WBA youth academy, and it has to be noted that he made three appearances for the Baggies at senior level in all competitions. Liam O’Neil played for the likes of VPS and Scunthorpe United on loan as well before joining Chesterfield in 2015.
After scoring two goals in 45 appearances for the club in the league, O’Neil moved to Cambridge United in the winter of 2017. As his mother comes from Wales, O’Neil is open to play for the Wales national team, but he has yet to earn a cap with the Dragons.
Highlighted Team (Shrewsbury):
Based in Shrewsbury, Shropshire, Shrewsbury Town are a professional club that play home games at New Meadow stadium, the venue which was opened in 2007 and has the capacity of 10,361. Shrewsbury Town were founded back in 1886, with some reports indicating the club was established at the Lion Hotel.
The Blues wear blue shirts with yellow stripe and blue shorts when playing at home, whilst the colour of their away kit is purple. Mickey Brown holds the club record for most appearances as he played 190 games for the club, scoring 9 goals in the league. Both Wolverhampton and Walsall are regarded as the club’s fiercest rivals, but there have always been fireworks in matches between Shrewsbury Town and Hereford United as well.
The two teams face each other in the “A49 derby” and it has to be noted that the Blues have built rivalries with Chester City and Wrexham as well.
