Our prediction for this Ligue 1 match:
St Etienne and Olympique Marseille face each other at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard on Sunday evening in what will be their first meeting in Ligue 1 since April 2022. Les Verts are low on confidence following a heavy 5-0 loss to Rennes and seeing that both Mathieu Cafaro and Augustine Boakye are banned for the match, home win should not be considered.
OM, on the other hand, came from behind to beat Monaco 2-1 in their last league fixture, with the team climbing to second place in the standings. Given St Etienne’s shaky defence and important absences, we predict that Roberto De Zerbi’s troops are going to pick up all three points from the match. A man to watch in the away side will be Mason Greenwood, who scored the winner against Monaco, while the likes of Pol Lirola, Amine Harit, Derek Cornelius, Valentin Carboni, Faris Moumbagna, and Ruben Blanco continue to miss out with injuries.
Highlighted Player (Pierre-Emile Höjbjerg):
Born in Copenhagen, on the 5th of August, 1995, Hojbjerg has been playing football since the age of five. The Danish International spent his youth career playing for clubs BK Skjold, F.C. Copenhagen and Brondby IF. In 2012, he moved to Germany to sign his first professional contract with Bundesliga giants FC Bayern Munich.
After spending his first year playing for the Munich reserves, the midfielder made his maiden professional appearance the following season, in a Bundesliga game against FC Nurnberg on the 13th of April. Hojbjerg's next spell came at FC Augsburg, who signed him on a six-month loan from the Bavarians in January 2015. The same year, he scored his first-ever professional goal that came in a 2-1 away loss to Paderborn 07 on the 11th of April. The following season, he was loaned out again, this time to Schalke 04 for a whole season.
In a move that would mark the end of his stint in German Football, Hojbjerg joined Premier league club Southampton in 2016 on a transfer worth 13 million euros. He's currently on a five-year contract with the Saints. At the International level, the 24-year-old represented Denmark at every iteration of the youth level before making his senior debut on the 28th of May, 2014, in a friendly against Sweden.
Highlighted Team (St Etienne):
Saint Etienne are a professional football club that compete in French Ligue 1. Les Verts were founded in 1919 by employees of a grocery store chain based in Saint Etienne. Saint Etienne wear green shirts and white shorts when playing at home ground and they play their home matches at Stade Geoffroy-Guichard.
The stadium was opener on 13 September, 1931 and following the renovation the capacity of the venue increased to 42 000. In 1981 les Verts won their tenth Ligue 1 trophy, but they have been in the shadow of Ligue 1 giants Lyon and PSG in the 21st century.
Speaking of the club’s European success, Saint Etienne made it to the European Cup (Champions League) final in 1976, but Bundesliga champions Bayern Munich proved to be a big catch for the French outfit. Anyhow, that is regarded as the club’s biggest success. It has to be noted that the likes of Michel Platini, Jacques Santini, Laurent Blanc and Aime Jacquet all played for Saint Etienne in the past.
