Our prediction for this Netherlands Eredivisie match:
After rolling over Sturm 4-1 in the Champions League qualifier, PSV will look to give fans yet another reason to celebrate when they take on Utrecht in their Eredivisie opener. The Red-Whites produced a brilliant display against Sturm and given their performance in the Super Cup triumph over Feyenoord, home win should definitely be considered. PSV products Johan Bakayoko and Isaac Babadi should keep their spots in the starting XI as well as summer signing Noah Lang, while Anwar El-Ghazi misses out through suspension.
Utrecht, on the other hand, did well to beat Espanyol 3-0 in their last warm-up game, but given their 26-game losing run at Philips Stadion, anything but a routine home win would be a big surprise. There are no selection worries in the away team ahead of the trip to Eindhoven. Summer signing Isac Lidberg is likely to make his official Utrecht debut against PSV.
Highlighted Player (Luuk de Jong):
The 26-year-old Dutch striker Luuk de Jong is considered one of Europe’s deadliest strikers with his incredible return of goals in games he spends playing. Luuk de Jong began his football career at De Graafschap in 2008, but moved on to Twente only a year later.
The tally of 39 goals in 76 league appearances earned him a transfer to Borussia Monchengladbach, but his spell in Germany ended in disappointment. Bundesliga club attempted to revive his career by sending him out on loan to Newcastle United but his stint with the English club yielded even more disappointment and concluded in utter disaster with De Jong playing 12 games without scoring a single goal for the Magpies.
A return to Netherlands and PSV Eindhoven turned out to be a proper hit for the 26-year-old striker who has restored his scoring touch with more than 50 goals for the Boeren after less than 90 games.
Highlighted Team (Utrecht):
Established on July 1, 1970, Utrecht is a Dutch club that competes in the Eredivisie. The club was founded as a merger of VV DOS, USV Elinkwijk, and Velox, and it has to be noted that VV DOS did well to win the Eredivisie trophy back in 1958.
Utrecht, on the other hand, have yet to win the national championship, but they have lifted three KNVB Cup trophies (1984/85, 2002/03, 2003/04). Leo van Veen is leading the club’s all-time goal-scoring chart with 153 goals. Speaking of the club’s colours, they were white and red shirts when playing at home, while blue is the dominant colour of their away jersey.
Due to the hooligan clashes, Utrecht have a rivalry with Dutch giants Ajax. The games between the two clubs have always been very tense on the field. Utrecht welcome their rivals at Stadion Galgenwaard, the venue which can hold up to 23,750 people. The stadium was opened back in May 1936.
