Our prediction for this DFB Pokal match:
Europa-Park Stadion will host Wednesday’s DFB Pokal game between Freiburg and Paderborn, the two teams who meet for the first time since January 2020. Freiburg aim to recover from a 2-1 loss to Bayer Leverkusen and they are likely to fight tooth and nail against Paderborn. Manuel Gulde is pushing for a start after scoring as a substitute in the BayArena defeat, while all Maximilian Philipp, Roland Sallai, Yannik Keitel, Christian Gunter, Daniel-Kofi Kyereh, and Max Rosenfelder remain in the recovery room.
Lukas Kwasniok’s troops, on the other hand, are a team with two faces, with the team producing much better showings at home than on the travels. Since Paderborn experienced all sorts of problems at the back in a 3-1 loss at Hertha Berlin, we are tempted to put our money on Christian Streich’s charges this time out. Jannis Heuer misses out with a groin problem, while both Kimberly Ezekwem and Maximilian Rohr are major doubts.
Highlighted Player (Nils Petersen):
Son to a football coach, Andreas, the Freiburg striker Nils Petersen is a physical forward best known for his clinical finishing. A former Bayern Munich striker never got a chance to prove his worth with Bundesliga giants and had to take a long road to prominence which included loan spells at Werder Bremen and Freiburg, before penning a permanent deal with Die Breisaguer in 2015.
Petersen’s impressive exploits during the 2017/18 season helped him get into Germany’s provisional FIFA World Cup 2018 squad although his father Andreas would argue it was his personal influence that helped Joachim Loew write his son’s name in the 23-man list. Namely, Andres Piteresen spotted the Germany manager on a beach in January and decided to ask him about his son’s chances of making it into Germany World Cup squad.
Piteresen was rewarded with his senior Germany cap in an Austria friendly but unfortunately for his father missed out on the final squad for the tournament in Russia.
Highlighted Team (Paderborn):
Welcoming their rivals at Benteler-Arena, Paderborn are a German club that will compete in the Bundesliga in the 2019/2020 season. The club played their first ever match in the German top flight on August 24, 2019, with the team sharing the spoils with Mainz (2-2) in front of home fans.
Benteler-Arena can hold up to 15,000 spectators and it was opened on July 20, 2008. Paderborn play their home matches in blue and black shirts and black shirts, but white is the dominant colour of their away kit. Until the 1980s TuS Scholls Neuhaus were considered the club’s main rivals are Arminia Bielefeld, with the two teams facing each other in Ostwestfalenderby.
This rivalry was established in the 2008/2009 season when Arminia Bielefeld dropped to the 2. Bundesliga. It has to be noted that Paderborn have yet to represent Germany in European competitions.
