Our prediction for this EFL Cup match:
Southampton and Sheffield Wednesday take on each other at St. Mary’s Stadium in a highly-anticipated EFL Cup clash. The Saints aim to make amends for a heavy 4-1 loss to Newcastle United, and it seems as if they will not have a better chance than this to get back on course. Both Livramento and Walker-Peters miss out with injuries, as well as Juan Larios who limped off at the weekend, while Wednesday’s game will be a perfect chance for the likes of Lavia, Diallo, Armstrong, and Lyanco to prove their worth. Summer signing Joe Aribo is pushing for a start as well.
The Owls, on the other hand, did well to eliminate Morecambe in the FA Cup at the weekend, but they will have a mountain to climb in the St. Mary’s Stadium showdown. In their last meeting at the venue Southampton defeated Sheffield Wednesday 2-0, and we predict that the history is going to repeat itself. Alex Mighten is cup-tied, while both Michael Ihiekwe and Marvin Johnson are pushing for recalls.
Highlighted Player (Theo Walcott):
Theo James Walcott is an English football player with roots from Jamaica born on 16th of March 1989 in London. Walcott started his football career for AFC Newbury and after scoring over 100 goals in his first season Southampton signed the young Walcott. After 2 seasons playing for the Saints scoring 4 goals in 21games Arsenal transferred Walcott to London for approximately 12 million GBP where he signed a 1 million GBP per year contract by the age of 17.
Walcott is known for being a very fast right-winger but is able to play as a striker as well. Walcott can be used very effectively to set up a counter attack but is the type of offensive player that is very dependant on the rest of the team.
Despite his young age Walcott made his debut for the English national team in May 2006 and played for over 40 games in the national team already. One of Walcott’s biggest weaknesses are his height (only 173cm) and the fact he get’s injured very quickly. Walcott won the FA Cup in 2013/2014 and 2014/15 with Arsenal and the Community Shield in 2015. During the World Cup in 2014 Walcott was injured.
Highlighted Team (Sheffield Wednesday):
Sheffield Wednesday are one of the two famous clubs from the city of Sheffield (South Yorkshire). The Owls compete in the English second tier (Championship) and they play their home matches at Hillsborough.
The venue was the scene of the Hillsborough disaster which occurred in 1989 when 96 Liverpool supporters were crushed to death in the FA Cup semi-final. It has to be noted that the World Cup (1966) and the Euro (1996) matches were played at Hillsborough.
Sheffield Wednesday have won four First Division trophies (1902/2903, 1903/1904, 1928/1929, 1929/2930) and they finished the 1960/1961 campaign in second place in the standings. The Owls have clinched three FA Cup trophies (1896, 1907, 1935), with the team winning the League Cup in 1991.
Sheffield Wednesday defeated English giants Manchester United (1-0) in the title game. Sheffield United are regarded as the Owls’ main rivals and the two teams face each other in the Steel City derby.
