Our prediction for this Europa League match:
After surviving RKC Waalwijk (3-1) in their last league match, Ajax will look to give fans yet another reason for celebration when they take on Union Berlin in the Europa League last 32, first leg. The Amsterdammers have been producing fine displays in all competitions ever since interim boss John Heitinga took over the reins, but Thursday’s clash will be anything but a walk in the park for Dusan Tadic and Co. Heitinga can count on key players for the first leg, with Brian Brobbey likely to return to the starting XI after scoring as a substitute against RKC.
Steven Bergwijn is a major doubt after missing the RKC game due to the lack of fitness. The Bundesliga outfit, on the other hand, came from behind to beat Leipzig at Red Bull Arena on Saturday. Since Urs Fischer’s men are on a five-game winning run in the German top flight, we predict that they will grab something from the first leg. Forward Andras Schafer misses out with injury, while Christopher Trimmel and Janik Haberer are banned for the match.
Highlighted Player (Steven Berghuis):
Born in Apeldoorn, Netherlands on December 19, 1991, Steven Berghuis is a Dutch winger who plays for Ajax in the Eredivisie. Berghuis played for the likes of Vitesse/AGOVV, WSV Apeldoorn, and Go Ahead Eagles during his youth career before joining Twente in 2009.
The 183-cm-tall footballer continued playing for the Reds at senior level. After ending his loan spell with VVV-Venlo, Steven Berghuis joined AZ Alkmaar in the summer of 2012, and three years later signed a deal with the Premier League club Watford. After making no more than nine appearances in the English top flight, Berghuis moved to Feyenoord in August 2016, and he has been playing De club aan de Maas ever since.
His main position is right winger, but he is capable of producing fine displays as both left winger and attacking midfielder as well. He made his Netherlands debut on May 27, 2016 in a 1-1 draw with the Republic of Ireland.
Highlighted Team (Union Berlin):
Union Berlin are a German football club originally founded back in 1906. Die Eisernen play home games at Stadion An der Alten Forsterei which can hold up to 22,012 spectators. Union Berlin’s home kit is red, with the team wearing white shirts and white shorts on the travels.
Union Berlin finished the 1923 domestic campaign as runners-up, with the team suffering a 3-0 loss to Hamburger SV in the title game. Speaking of the club’s biggest success in the German Cup, die Eisernen made it to the final of the competition in the 2000/2001 season. Schalke, though, proved to be a big catch for Union Berlin in the decider, with Jorg Bohme scoring a brace for die Knappen (2-0).
Union Berlin will face their local rivals Hertha in the 2019/2020 Bundesliga season as they secured promotion to the German top flight, but Hansa Rostock are considered the club’s main rivals.
