Our prediction for this Ligue 1 match:
Clermont and Strasbourg take on each other at Stade Gabriel Montpied in a postponed Ligue 1 game on Wednesday evening. Clermont aim to make amends for a 4-0 loss to Monaco, and seeing that they are only one point clear of the relegation zone, the hosts are desperate to grab something from the match. All Allevinah, Bayo, and Khaoui are on international duty, but both Alidu Seidu and Johan Gastien are back from suspension.
Le Racing, on the other hand, aim to build on back-to-back wins over Metz and Montpellier. Strasbourg are eager to move closer to the Europa League berth, and given Clermont’s shaky defence, we believe that there is a big value in betting on the visiting side. The good news for the visitors is that Ludovic Ajorque is back from suspension, while both Alexander Djiku and Habib Diallo are on Africa Cup of Nations.
Highlighted Player (Frédéric Guilbert):
Despite his modest height for a centre-back, Frederic Guilbert is a remarkably strong in aerial duels. Former France U21 international is a player of great positional awareness and tactical discipline who makes immense defensive contribution for his team.
A versatile defender who can play in various positions across the backline, Guilbert can also be deployed as a right midfielder where his speed and agility come to play. Born in Valognes, Frederic Guilbert spent all of his career playing in France although he has thus far failed to spend more than two seasons at a single club. Spells at Caen, AS Cherbourg, Bordeaux were insufficient for Guilbert to secure regular playing time and prove his worth, which he hopes would change at Caen.
Guilbert joined the Stade Michel d’Ornano based club on a permanent deal in 2017, after a season-long loan spell away from Bordeaux. He went on to play 42 matches across all competitions in his second season with Caen and has done well to announce himself as an important player for the French side.
Highlighted Team (Strasbourg):
Founded back in 1906, Strasbourg is a professional football team that compete in French Ligue 1. Le Racing did remarkably well to win the 1979 Ligue 1 trophy and that is considered the biggest success in the history of the club. Strasbourg won Coupe de France on three occasions (1951, 1966, 2001) and they have three Coupe de la Ligue trophies as well (1964, 1997, 2005). Strasbourg’s main rivals are Metz and the two teams face each other in the Derby de l’Est (The Eastern derby).
Le Racing recorded their biggest victory over Valenciennes (10-0) in the 1937-1938 season, whilst they suffered their biggest loss to Limoges (0-8) in the 1959/1960 season. Paraguayan goalkeeper Jose Luis Chilavert, who is well known for his free-kick abilities, played for the club from 2000 to 2003, but he failed to score in a league match during his spell with the Stade de la Meinau outfit. Speaking of Stade de la Meinau, Strasbourg’s home ground was opened back in 1914 and the capacity of the venue is 29,320.
