Canada
All eyes will be on Estadio Nacional de Costa Rica when los Ticos take on Canada in a highly-anticipated World Cup qualifier. Costa Rica desperately needed a win at Jamaica, and they managed to get one thanks to Joel Campbell’s goal. Los Ticos aim to climb to top four, but they will have a big fish to fry in Friday’s showdown. All Jefry Valverde, Randall Leal, and Aaron Suarez have been left out of the squad, while veteran midfielder Bryan Ruiz should once again start from the bench.
The Canucks, on the other hand, are eager to qualify for the World Cup finals for the first time since 1986. Canada are leading the chase for automatic qualification, but seeing that Bayern Munich ace Alphonso Davies is out of contention with heart problems, we are tempted to put our money on los Ticos. A man to keep an eye on in the away side will be Besiktas attacker Cyle Larin.
Highlighted Player (Keylor Navas):
Keylor Navas is an exceptionally gifted goal keeper who plays for Spanish club Real Madrid and the Costa Rica national team. The 29-year-old rose through the youth ranks at Saprissa before making his professional bow with them in 2005.
After a successful stint with them, he ventured into Spanish football with a move to Albacete and then to Levante. His exploits at Levante earned him a move to Real Madrid where he quickly established as a first-team regular. Despite coming within seconds of moving away from the club to accommodate David de Gea, Navas became a crowd favorite with outstanding displays in 2015-16 season.
Navas has played over 60 games for Costa Rica having made his debut in 2008. He has represented them at the 2014 FIFA World Cup where Costa Rica were a losing quarter-finalists. Their progress in the tournament is largely attributed to the success of Navas under the sticks.
Highlighted Team (Canada):
Canada national football team played their first official match back in 1924 when they suffered a 3-2 loss to Australia in Brisbane. The following year the two teams faced each other one in Adelaide, with the Canadians managing to get their revenge on the Socceroos. The Canucks had several unsuccessful attempts to make it to the World Cup finals, but in 1986 they finally booked their place at the showpiece tournament.
Canada faced France in their opener, with Jean-Pierre Papin scoring the winner for les Tricolores in the dying minutes of the match. The Canadians were beaten by Hungary and USSR in the next two group games as well and, as a result, they failed to advance to the knockout stages.
Speaking of the team’s trophies, the Canucks won the CONCACAF Gold cup on two occasions (1985, 2000), with the team beating Honduras and Colombia respectively in the title games. Canada national football team play their home games at BMO Field and the capacity of the venue is 30,000.
