Our prediction for this Euro 2024 match:
Switzerland take on Belarus at Stadion Karadjordje (Novi Sad, Serbia) in their EURO 2024 opener. The Rossocrociati aim to recover from a massive World Cup loss (1-6) to Portugal, and the bookies see them as hot favourites to win Saturday’s encounter. Chicago Fire midfielder Xherdan Shaqiri has been ruled out with injury, but fellow star player Granit Xhaka made the cut. Monaco forward Breel Embolo, who has netted 12 goals in the Ligue 1 so far this term, is widely expected to lead the line for the visiting team.
The hosts, on the other hand, failed to impress in a 2-0 loss to Oman in November, and seeing that Saturday’s game will be played on a neutral location, anything but a routine away win would be a big surprise. In their last meeting in a competitive match, back in 1999, Switzerland defeated Belarus 2-0.
Highlighted Player (Xherdan Shaqiri):
Another impressive player who emigrated to Switzerland, Xherdan Shaqiri is a midfielder with excellent technical qualities, very strong in taking players on and creating chances for his teammates, while also being a danger from set pieces. The Serbian-born footballer formed an excellent midfielder pairing with Granit Xhaka at FC Basel, before making a high-profile move to Bayern Munich in the summer of 2012.
Shaqiri went on to prove a great deal of potential at Allianz Arena, scoring 11 goals in 52 Bundesliga matches, but he decided to leave in search of first team football, first joining Inter Milan and then moving to Stoke City. It was at Britannia Stadium that the attacking midfielder rediscovered his form and if he continues playing at such a high level, it won’t be long before he returns to the biggest stage.
Even when he was not playing regularly at club level, Shaqiri would always reserve his best performances for the national team, as witnessed by 17 goals in first 50 caps. The midfielder was especially impressive at the 2014 World Cup finals, where he scored no fewer than three goals.
Highlighted Team (Belarus):
Belarus national football team have been competing on the international stage since 1992. The Belarusians played their first match against Lithuania on July 20, 1992, but the game was not FIFA-recognized. The White Wings faced Ukraine in their first official match, with the team sharing the spoils with the fellow former Soviet republic.
Belarus have yet to qualify for a major tournament and they have slim chances of booking their place at the 2018 FIFA World Cup. The Belarusians recorded their biggest win on September 4, 2014, with the team rolling over Tajikistan 6-1 in Borisov and speaking of their biggest loss, they were hammered by Austria (0-5) on June 11, 2003.
Alexander Hleb is the most famous footballer who played for the Belarus national team and it is well known that he spent four seasons at Barcelona. Belarus play their home games at Borisov Arena and they wear white shirts and white shorts when welcoming their rivals. The colour of their away kits is black.
