Ligue 1 Season Preview 2017/2018

Ligue 1 Season Preview 2017/2018

Against all odds Monaco won the 2016/2017 Ligue 1 title, with the team putting an end to PSG’s dominance in French football. Les Rouges et Blancs are on a quest to defend their trophy, but it remains to be seen if they are capable of repeating the success.

Monaco were producing splendid displays in both Ligue 1 and the Champions League last term. Les Rouges et Blancs finished the season in top position in the standings, eight points clear of star-studded PSG, while making it to the semi-finals of the elite competition. The likes of Mendy, Bernardo Silva, Bakayoko and Germain all left the club in the summer transfer window, while last season’s top scorer Kylian Mbappe is heavily linked with a move to Real Madrid. Without the talented attacker up front Monaco would have slim chances of defending their Ligue 1 title as he will be sorely missed in the 2017/2018 campaign.

Paris Saint Germain are eager to regain the domestic title. Les Parisiens have big ambitions for the upcoming season and the club chiefs are determined to reinforce the squad. Barcelona superstar is on PSG’s radar and the Parc des Princes outfit are seen as main favourites to sign the Brazilian. The club management has already signed Juventus full-back Dani Alves and Real Sociedad left-back Yuri this summer, whilst Barcelona are keen on bringing PSG midfielder Marco Verratti to Camp Nou. Anyhow, les Parisiens are considering No. 1 favourites to win the 2017/2018 Ligue 1 title as Monaco are unlikely to keep hold of their first-team regulars.

It has been seven years since Olympique Marseille won their last domestic title. OM owners did well to add several top-class players in the January transfer window, with Premier League ace Dimitri Payet joining the Stade Velodrome outfit. Payet is likely to play the main role in Rudi Garcia’s team, whilst latest signing Vincent Germain should pose a big threat for opposition defenders as well. Many people believe that the time has come for Olympique Marseille to bring glory days back to Stade Velodrome and I predict that they will record a good result in the 2017/2018 Ligue 1 campaign. Taking everything into account, OM are definitely capable of finishing the season in top three and booking their place in the Champions League.

Nice impressed in the national championship last term, with the team finishing the season in third place in the standings. Les Aiglons take on Ajax in the Champions League third qualifying round and upcoming matches against the Eredivisie club will be anything but a walk in the park for Lucien Favre’s troops. Mario Balotelli is still part of the team, but Younes Belhanda, who was producing scintillating showings in the 2016/2017 Ligue 1 campaign, joined Galatasaray earlier this summer. Coach Lucien Favre still has a number of high-profile footballers to choose from and I would not be surprised if les Aiglones book their place in European competitions.

Olympique Lyon head into the new season without their top scorer and key player Alexandre Lacazette. The new Arsenal attacker will be sorely missed in the 2017/2018 season and I do not believe that les Gones are going to win their first Ligue 1 title since 2008. Taking everything into account, Paris Saint Germain, who managed to keep hold of their star players in the summer transfer window, are widely expected to regain the domestic trophy, but, no doubt, yet another entertaining season is on the cards.
