Bundesliga Season Preview 2018/2019

Over the years Bayern Munich have established themselves as the dominant force in German football. New coach Niko Kovac is on a quest to help the mighty Bavarians defend their Bundesliga trophy, but the reigning champions will have to prove their worth on the field.

Bayern Munich chiefs were not too active in the summer transfer window, but new coach Niko Kovac will count on the likes of Leon Goretzka, Serge Gnabry and Alphonso Davis in the 2018/2019 season. Important midfielder Arturo Vidal is no longer part of the Bundesliga giants as he joined Barcelona earlier this summer. The German champions often struggle without Jupp Heynckes on the bench and it remains to be seen if the experienced tactician, who won four Bundesliga trophies with Bayern Munich, is going to be sorely missed in the upcoming season. The Bavarians rolled over Eintracht Frankfurt 5-0 in the German Super Cup and it is no surprise they are considered hot favourites to win their seventh consecutive domestic trophy.

Borussia Dortmund are determined to put an end to Bayern Munich’s dominance in German football and the fact that the club owners managed to keep hold of star player Marco Reus is certainly giving fans a reason for optimism ahead of the start of the 2018/2019 season. Belgium international is undisputedly the club’s biggest signing of the summer and he is widely expected to help the Millionaires improve their game. New boss Lucien Favre knows Borussia’s rivals well as he was in charge of Borussia M’gladbach and Hertha in the past, but it remains to be seen if the Signal-Iduna-Park are going to win their first Bundesliga title since 2012. Michy Batshuayi joined Sevilla in the summer transfer window and it is no surprise Borussia Dortmund struggled in front of goal in a hard-fought win over Greuther Furth in their German Cup opener.

Schalke begin life without talented midfielder Leon Goretzka, but the club management did well to sign the likes of Salif Sane, Omar Mascarell, Suat Serdar, Steven Skrzybski and Hamza Mendyl in the summer. Die Knappen aim to book their place in the Champions League for the second season in a row, but that is easier said than done.

Leipzig chiefs were forced to sell important midfielder Naby Keita, who joined Liverpool, but they spent €43 million in total to sign the likes of Nordi Mukiele, Matheus Cunha and Marcelo Saracchi. The Red Bulls will almost certainly play on three fronts in the 2018/2019 season and it remains to be seen if tired legs are going to prove to be a big problem for Ralf Rangnick’s troops.

Bayer Leverkusen are no longer considered favourites to secure a top-four finish, but talented Brazilian winger Paulinho, who signed for the BayArena outfit for a fee of €18,50 million, could help the team look sharper in front of goal. Hoffenheim will represent Germany in the Champions League in the 2018/2019 season and new signings Kasim Adams, Leonardo Bittencourt, Ishak Belfodil, Vincenzo Grifo and Felipe Brenet should help them play an important role in both the national championship and the elite competition.

Fortuna Dusseldorf return to Bundesliga following a five-year absence, with Nurnberg returning to the German top flight as well.

Taking everything into account, yet another entertaining Bundesliga campaign is on the cards and, no doubt, all eyes will be on Allianz Arena on Friday evening when Bayern Munich and Hoffenheim face each other on the opening match of the season.
